This course introduces ākonga to the fundamental ideas of mathematics through real-world contexts, purposeful problem solving, and collaborative learning. Based on the refreshed New Zealand Curriculum (2026), Year 9 Mathematics focuses on developing understanding across key strands: number, algebra, geometry, measurement, statistics, and probability, with an emphasis on mathematical thinking, reasoning, and communication.
Ākonga will:
- Develop fluency with number and algebraic thinking, including recognising patterns and using general rules.
- Explore measurement and geometry through real-life applications, such as designing spaces or comparing units.
- Learn how to make sense of data, interpret graphs and charts, and use probability to make informed predictions.
- Engage in collaborative, culturally responsive tasks that value diverse ways of thinking and problem solving.
This course is designed to:
- Support all learners in building strong mathematical foundations.
- Nurture confidence and enjoyment in mathematics.
- Prepare students for Year 10 and senior mathematics pathways, including academic and vocational routes.
