Level 2/3 Outdoor Education

Year 12 Outdoor Education (open to year 13 students wanting to take OED - can offer level 3 credits)
Developing skills for planning, risk management and leadership through the preparation and implementation of expeditions over the year. There is an emphasis on personal responsibility, awareness of self and others, tiaki (care) i te taiao (environment), developing knowledge of local places, skill mastery, critical thinking and risk management.
Activities through the year include:
Learning to roll a kayak, white water kayaking/rafting, rock climbing, mountain biking, snow terrain hiking (alpine environment)
Outdoor activity skills are focused on in practical lessons as preparation for the trips away. Commitment to a lunch time and after school (depending on the timetable) each week is essential. Assessment is practical and written including Achievement and Unit Standards. Our assessments are tied to practical lessons and trips. Students will be given class time to catch up on any work missed due to trips away. Students with a heavy academic workload find this course a great way to refresh themselves and get their mind off things during the week.
Days out: max 12-13 over the year.
22 Level 2 Credits offered in this course (or up to 20 level 3 unit standards)
Please note that if you select 12OED and 12PED/12SRE there is one achievement standard that is offered in both courses. This will impact the number of credits available.
Course Overview
Term 1
Te taiao awa:
Skills for Whitewater kayaking, movement around rivers - focus on local river environments, risk management assessment and personal responsibility
Term 2
Te taiao ngahere:
Tramping and Mountain Biking skills - focus on our forest environments, planning for outdoor trips and leadership
Term 3
Te taiao maunga:
Alpine Tramping and Rock Climbing skills - focus on mountain (alpine) and rock environments, personal leadership through challenge and risk management
Term 4
Climbing or biking overnight - students to plan last overnight trip using skills learned - focus this term on catch up assessments and celebrating skills and learning for the year.
Entry Requirements
This course is intended for Year 12 students but is open to Year 13 as there are Level 3 OED credits available if requested (to be discussed with Miss Chapman). Students who have not previously studied Outdoor Education may be admitted at the discretion of the HOD if they have a good motivation, fitness and a commitment to engaging in learning.
Students should be confident in water, fit or motivated to improve and committed to participate in challenges.
Contributions and Equipment
A recommended donation of $400 (to be confirmed) as a contribution to costs will enable the course to run. Specialist equipment will be provided. Generic outdoor clothing (eg. raincoat, thermals) and equipment (eg. sleeping bag, tramping pack, mountain bike) are available if students are unable to provide (this is covered by an optional $45 hire for the year).
Pathway
Completing this course can lead to entry to tertiary courses in Tourism and Outdoor Recreation. Graduates could also be suited to Defense Forces and other careers that involve leadership. Most graduates find their way into guiding careers such as Sea Kayaking, Rafting and Tramping, Cycle guiding. Other possibilities are teaching Outdoor Education at secondary or Tertiary level, Conservation work such as DOC, Pest Management, Land care Management, Eco tourism.
