Year 10 Outdoor Education

Course Description



10 OED is a largely experiential course running for a whole year. Students will experience the following recreational skills: 

Flatwater slalom kayaking, sea kayaking, snorkelling, mountain biking, rock climbing, team building activities (ABL), camping skills, navigation and tramping, survival skills. Through these activities, students will develop their self-esteem, resilience, interpersonal skills, organisational skills, environmental care, goal setting and leadership skills. 

Commitment to out of school time (after school and a lunchtime) each week is essential. If there is a clash with after school jobs or sports, another option should be selected.

The trips are: an overnight tramp, overnight sea kayak trip, overnight survival trip, full day optional canyoning trip, optional ski day, rafting half day  

There are up to two curriculum based assessments and group work and research class assignments. Students will design and make 1-2 outdoor craft projects. 

Although outdoor experience is not essential, a good level of personal fitness and water confidence is a must. Some classes are theory and preparation for practicals/trips, and one class a week is practical. Students must provide or hire the correct clothing for trips and practicals.



Course Overview

Term 1
Aquatic activities: Snorkelling skills, Kayak rescue skills, Slalom Kayaking skills Sea Kayaking skills, Stream Walking,

Term 2
Land Based activities: Mountain biking skills, Craft project 1, internal assessment, Tramping and camping skills. Overnight tramp or Sea Kayak

Term 3
Land based activities: Rock Climbing and canyoning skills, Bush Survival skills and navigation, Craft project 2.

Term 4
Aquatic activities: . Stream walking. Further Sea Kayak skills, an overnight trip Sea Kayaking. Canyoning trip, Survival skills overnight

Contributions and Equipment

A recommended donation of $250 (to be confirmed) as a contribution to costs will enable the course to run. Specialist equipment will be provided. Generic outdoor clothing (eg. coat, thermals) and equipment (eg. sleeping bag, pack, mountainbike) is available if students are unable to provide it (this is covered by an optional $45 hire)

Pathway

It is recommended to select 10OED as preparation for level 1 Outdoor Education.
This course, if pursued further, can lead to training at tertiary level and a career in tourism, guiding or instructing adventure pursuits in the outdoors. Also work in conservation.
