Level 1 Outdoor Education
Course Description
Students will participate in a range of activities including Kayaking, Sea kayaking, Rock Climbing, Mountain Biking, Tramping, Outdoor First Aid. There are three compulsory camps (these may include a weekend), two day trips and two optional day trips. Commitment to a practical during lunch hour or after school (depending on the timetable) each week is essential. Assessment is practical and written. There is a relaxed atmosphere and a chance to enjoy the outdoors. Students will be given class time to catch up on any work missed due to trips away. Most course work is through Unit Standards, there is one Achievement Standard. Throughout the course, there is a focus on reducing impact on the environment during recreation, building personal competence, risk management and leadership skills.

Entry Requirements
This course is open to mature, reliable and fit Year 11, 12 and 13 students. A commitment to attendance on practical lessons is essential (ie. priority must be given over any other non-curricular activities). Students must be prepared to accept a challenge and to practice skills taught.
Contributions and Equipment
A recommended donation of $250 (to be confirmed) as a contribution to costs will enable the course to run. Specialist equipment will be provided, such as kayaks and climbing equi[pment. Students are expected to come to every practical class with a longsleeve thermal top.
Generic outdoor clothing (eg. coat, thermals) and equipment (eg. sleeping bag, pack, mountainbike) is available if students are unable to provide it (this is covered by an optional $45 hire).
Pathway
This course opens up opportunities to see what a future career could be like in the tourism and recreation industry. It is also a chance to develop personal skills to enjoy the outdoors in a safe way and developing an ability to lead others confidently. Noticeable growth in personal confidence and self confidence are an outcome of participating in our activities. These attributes are essential for any career a student chooses to pursue.
