Level 3 Media Studies

Course Description

Year 13 Media Studies is an enjoyable mix of theory and production. Students produce a documentary and study the relationship between film genre and society. Other topics include developments in the media, media representation and writing a feature article. Students have access to excellent equipment and editing software and screen their films at the Briefs Student Film Festival.




Course Overview

Term 1
THE SAMPLER - Film Production Workshop
• Film and edit a very, very short film in groups

MEDIA REPRESENTATION AND DEVELOPMENTS - Choose a research option

MEET THE BRIEF: Design a 4-5 Min Documentary Film
• Pitch film ideas
• Develop film concept, treatment and pre-production materials
• Start production (filming)

Term 2
SHOOT & EDIT - Continue film production
• Film and edit a 4-5 minute documentary to screen at BRIEFS

Term 3
Film Noir (or other) Genre

• In this film study we view classic noir films from the 1940s and 50s & more recent neo noir films. Students produce an essay discussing when and why these dark, stylish films emerged. This study of (largely American) history and noir style elements is fascinating and develops critical thinking around how media and society are related.

BRIEFS FILM FESTIVAL, REVISION AND EXAM
COMPLETION OF OPTIONAL STANDARDS

Entry Requirements

An interest in the media and a willingness to produce a media product - usually but not necessarily, a short film.


Contributions and Equipment

$20.00 for technical support and equipment - film equipment and computers with edit software are available at school.
Students need their own Class 10, 16GB or 32GB SD card.
An external hard drive for file saving is recommended but not essential.

Pathway

Studying media develops your critical thinking as well as analytical and creative skills to set you on track for a variety of employment possibilities. Gain transferable skills to do with communication, digital media, journalism and film-making and that can also support careers in independent or Government research, law and commerce and other fields requiring analysis and problem solving.

They select a research topic from either development or representation and the media text Standard 91497 is optional.
