Year 10 Music
Course Description
This course is designed to help build confidence in the essential skills of modern music learning: performance, composition and understanding musical context. Students will gain experience in performing in front of others, writing their own music and recording this on the music software available. They will learn music theory up to at least a Grade 2 standard. Students will be encouraged to use their main instruments or voice for performance, but will all learn keyboard as a method for understanding how to read music. We enjoy working with students in all genres of music according to their interests.
Course Overview
Term 1
Song Writing is the main focus of this term. You will learn how to construct a melody and create chords to compliment this. There will be an opportunity to play a song on the keyboard or to sing for assessment. We will consider the context surrounding the origin of song form a cultural perspective and look at lyric writing.
Term 2
During this term we will look at the Blues as a musical structure and will work on performances and compositions within this style.
Term 3
Building on the learning from the earlier terms, in Term 3 students will work on a group performance of Pachelbel's Canon. we will look at the structure of 'canon' and see how this can be re-interpreted into a modern context to suit all different genres of music.
Term 4
Music and the Media is examined in term 4 and students will spend time composing music to accompany a short movie trailer. We will also focus on reading and writing music in preparation for Level 1 music study.
Entry Requirements
Beginners welcome, though most students will have taken 9MUS.
Contributions and Equipment
Students will be given the option of taking subsidised instrumental/vocal lessons (50% reduction of standard private music rates). Workbook $15.
