Year 12 Media Studies
The course is half theory and half production. Students explore media concepts such as representation and genre before moving into production and developing their film scripts into short films. They have access to excellent equipment and editing software and screen their films at the Briefs Student Film Festival.
Course Overview
Term 1
WALK THE TALK - FILM WORKSHOP
• Analyse short films, film language (cinematography, sound, editing, mise-en-scene)
• Workshop camera shots, angles, lighting and movement
• Collaborate in groups produce a very, very short drama film
• Generate ideas for your major film project
“I’M NOT LIKE THAT!” - UNDERSTANDING MEDIA REPRESENTATIONS
• Collect media texts containing representations of a specific group of society
• Apply representation theory to demonstrate your understanding of how the group is represented in the media
Term 2
ON THE ROAD - ROAD MOVIES (or other) FILM GENRE STUDY
• View and discuss road movies and how the genre responds to:
o Change in society
o Audience expectations / responses
o Commercial considerations
• Stay with road movies or choose another genre to write about
YOUR BIG PROJECT... SHORT FILM DESIGN AND PRODUCTION
From now till the end of Term 3 you will…
• Develop your film idea(s) and pitch them
• Workshop scriptwriting and write a film script
• Produce a film
Term 3
PLAN, DESIGN AND PRODUCE A SHORT FILM
• Individually, or in pairs, design and plan a 3-5 minute short film to screen at BRIEFS
• Your film will demonstrate control of technology, reflect its design and plan and appeal to its target audience
INTERNAL SCHOOL EXAM (Genre topic)
Term 4
BRIEFS FILM FESTIVAL, REVISION AND EXAM
Contributions and Equipment
$20.00 for technical support and equipment
Students should have their own Class 10, 16GB SD card and an external hard drive for film making.
Class 10 SD cards can be purchased at school for $15.00.
Entry Requirements
A minimum of 12 credits in 11ENG. Students not meeting this requirement may be admitted at the discretion of the HOD.
Pathway
Supports pathways to careers in communications including marketing and other media industries. Provides critical media analysis and production skills.
Credit Information
This course is eligible for subject endorsement.
Total Credits Available: 20 credits.
