Level 2 Media Studies
Course Description

Year 12 Media Studies is an enjoyable mix of theory and production. Students explore media concepts such as representation and genre as well as produce and develop film scripts into short films. They have access to excellent equipment and editing software and screen their films at the Briefs Student Film Festival.
Course Overview
Term 1
WALK THE TALK - FILM WORKSHOP
• Analyse short films, film language (cinematography, sound, editing, mise-en-scene)
• Workshop camera shots, angles, lighting and movement
• Collaborate in groups produce a very, very short drama film
• Generate ideas for your major film project
“I’M NOT LIKE THAT!” - UNDERSTANDING MEDIA REPRESENTATIONS
• Collect media texts containing representations of a specific group of society
• Apply representation theory to demonstrate your understanding of how the group is represented in the media
Term 2
SCRIPTWRITING
• Develop a film idea(s) and pitch it
• Workshop script-writing and write a film script
PLAN, DESIGN AND PRODUCE A SHORT FILM
• Individually, or in pairs, design and plan a 3-5 minute short film to screen at BRIEFS
• Your film will demonstrate control of technology, reflect its design and plan and appeal to its target audience
Term 3
COMPLETE YOUR SHORT FILM DESIGN AND PRODUCTION - preview screenings
ON THE ROAD - ROAD MOVIES (or other) FILM GENRE STUDY
• View and discuss road movies and how the genre responds to:
- Change in society
- Audience expectations / responses
- Commercial considerations
• Stay with road movies or choose another genre to write about
INTERNAL SCHOOL EXAM (Genre topic)
Term 4
BRIEFS FILM FESTIVAL, REVISION AND EXAM
Entry Requirements
An interest in the media and a willingness to produce a media product - usually but not necessarily, a short film.
Contributions and Equipment
$20.00 for technical support and equipment - film equipment and computers with edit software are available at school.
Students need their own Class 10, 16GB or 32GB SD card. An external hard drive for file saving is recommended but not essential.
Pathway
Studying media develops your critical thinking as well as analytical and creative skills to set you on track for a variety of employment possibilities. Gain transferable skills to do with communication, digital media, journalism and film-making and that can also support careers in independent or Government research, law and commerce and other fields requiring analysis and problem solving.
Credit Information
You will be assessed in this course through all or a selection of the standards listed below.
