Entry Requirements

Beginners welcome, though most students will have taken 9MUS.


This course is designed to help build confidence in the essential skills of modern music learning: performing, making music and understanding musical concepts. Students will gain experience in performing in front of others, writing their own music and recording this on the music software available. They will learn music theory up to at least a Grade 2 standard and develop ear training skills. Students will be encouraged to use their main instruments or voice for performance but will all learn keyboard as a method for understanding how to read music and compose music using music software. We enjoy working with students in all genres of music according to their interests and work individually and in groups throughout the year.


Course Overview

Term 1
The origins of Blues and Rock and Roll are studied - students will compose and then play a blues-based composition. We will also study the genre of Hip Hop and compose a hip-hop song using computer-based recording software.

Term 2
During Term 2 we will develop keyboard skills and will learn to perform a piece on the keyboard. We will also study Film Music and will compose music to a film excerpt.

Term 3
In Term 3 we will study New Zealand music and will do a research topic on an Aotearoa based musician or band.

Term 4
Students will rehearse and then perform a song of their choice in groups. Those who wish to can also perform

Throughout all terms, students will develop and be assessed on basic theory and aural concepts.
